The breakdown below shows how the above infrastructure costs are calculated for both on-premises and SaaS infrastructure.
For SaaS, the on-premises performance repository is not needed because the data is stored in the cloud. The cost associated with Cloud Data Storage and Analytics is included in the Saas Year 1-3 Subscription cost.
Server price estimates are based on an average specification DELL poweredge server with Windows Server installed.
For Storage costs Wasabi.com estimates the fully loaded costs of on premise storage over three years to be $32 per month (or $1152 over 3 years). For this exercise, we will assume an extremely friendly IS department who allow us a mere $12 per month ($360 over 3 years). On Premise monitoring systems generally have two repositories:
A Diagnostics repository collects very detailed metrics - some collected every second. Generally, these retain between one week and one months history.
A reporting/analytics repository which retains history for longer periods. Depending on the specific solution, this data may be an aggregated version of the diagnostics data. With SaaS solutions the SaaS vendor manages the repositories. Because the SaaS vendor has access to cloud storage and cloud compute they tend to support longer retention periods and more sophisticated cubing of data for analytics. At the time of the coding of this tool, SQL Server 2017 Standard edition was priced at US $1,859 per core (sold in a 2 core pack). We assume SQL Server as the back end repository for performance data.
